Arsène Wenger believes that only Aaron Ramsey can forgive Ryan Shawcross for the challenge that broke the Welshman’s leg.
On Saturday, Stoke play Arsenal for the first time since that fateful day last February when the 19-year-old was stretchered off with a snapped tibia and fibula. Wenger has urged the fans at Emirates Stadium to respect Shawcross and Stoke but when he was asked about absolution for the centre back he felt there is little he could do.
“It is only Ramsey who can forgive Ryan Shawcross for what happened to him,” said Wenger. “I cannot forgive. I have not that power.
“If you are the manager of Aaron Ramsey, who is 19 and has two bones broken in his leg, you cannot say you are not upset. It is absolutely normal you are upset.
“But I gave my feelings at the moment. What we were focused on after that was getting Ramsey back to playing again. And that is what he is just starting to do now.
“Ninety per cent of our energy was focussed not on Shawcross, but on Ramsey. We care about Aaron Ramsey and on his career. That is why I don't feel there is any need to talk about that.”
Ramsey will be not at Emirates Stadium but preparing for Nottingham Forest’s home game with Crystal Palace. The youngster is on loan at the City Ground until the New Year.
“Unfortunately we put him there to play games, but every game is postponed at the moment, so I cannot tell you how he is doing,” said Wenger. “But I want him to stay until January 2. They had seven games when I gave him out, so he still can get five or six, we will see.
“Normally he will come back in January.”
